Marigold was late. It would soon be dark in the human world, and she didn’t want to be caught here in the blackness of night. She knew it was best to pass through the portal at sunset, but it had been a long day.
It had started with a call for help from a young seal pup left on the beach by his mother while she went to search for food. He had been resting quietly in the shade of large rock, when he had heard the sniffing of a dog. The tiny seal’s heart began to race. He knew dogs meant danger. He drew back as far under the rock as he could. He scrunched down to be as small as possible.
But the dog was getting closer and closer. The baby knew it as only a matter of time before the dog found him.
The baby was terrified.
“Mama!: he cried out silently, “Help me! Where are you, Mama?”
Then the baby saw it. The big, black nose on the face of a large, brown dog.
And what was even worse, he could hear more dogs arriving too. Their shadows were rapidly approaching on the sand.

Marigold and the Seal Pup
Marigold was late. It would soon be dark in the human world, and she didn’t want to be caught here in the blackness of night. She knew it was best to pass through the portal at sunset, but it had been a long day.

But they weren’t the only new arrivals. A tiny fairy landed on his head.
“Don’t be afraid, little one,” the fairy whispered. “I’m here. I’ll keep you safe.”
With that the fairy fairy began to fly back and forth between the seal pup and the dogs. She was moving so fast, the dogs couldn’t even see her. They just felt the wind of her wings as she stirred up the sand. As the fairy beat her wings, sand blew into the eyes of the dogs. They quickly backed off, confused and shaking their heads.
Marigold stayed with the baby seal pup, guarding him until his mother returned in the late afternoon. Only then did she head for home.
